Wilhelmina von Blumenthal
Wilhelmina von Blumenthal read Modern Languages at Oxford and achieved a Distinction in her Masters on Renaissance Art at the Warburg Institute in London. She cut her teeth in the world of contemporary art at the Nosbaum Reding Gallery in Luxembourg with whom she toured the main European Art Fairs and organized projects. Highlights from this time were Nothing is Permanent, a monumental sculpture trail made for the city of Esch-Sur-Alzette during the city’s time as the European Capital of Culture in 2022 and Barthélémy Toguo’s restrospective at the Villa Merkel, Faith Can Move Mountains. Wilhelmina was also on the panel for the first edition of the Andreas Neumann Prize in Saarbrucken. She left Nosbaum Reding to open her own enterprise in Luxembourg including a project space on Hydra where since June 2023 she has been returning each summer. The rest of the year she participates in art fairs, holds pop-ups and takes part in collaborations with other galleries. Primarily based out of her office in Luxembourg, Wilhelmina curates independently and consults on cultural projects as well as facilitating art logistics for clients.
Wilhelmina also loves horses and when not traveling for art can be found on a polo pitch or hacking through the countryside.
About Hydra
The gallery on Hydra is located inside Admiral Miaolis’ mansion in the historic shipyard from where the Greek fleet was launched and won its independence against the Ottomans.
Wilhelmina’s is an emerging contemporary gallery located from June – September on the island of Hydra in Greece in a historic shipyard with a focus on young and mid-career artists. Located between the rocks and the sea the gallery provides an environment suspended in time where the artist’s works can be viewed with a leisure that provides a complimentary counterpoint to the fast-paced fairs and city exhibitions. These are nevertheless of paramount importance for the mission of supporting the artists and so in the winter Wilhelmina’s focus is on pop ups, collaborations with galleries and fairs. The artists exhibited share in common themes related to dreams, mythology and nature with a focus on figurative art.
Wilhelmina’s started out as “Wilhelmina’s Art Gallery” or – “WAG’s’ which led to our motto “the tail wags the dog.” We aspire to be a small and highly effective entity that has an impact greater than the sum of its parts. It is also a philosophy of life. The goal is to approach every artist and project we love with so much energy and enthusiasm you can’t tell if the dog is wagging the tail or the tail is wagging the dog – we shortened the name but the motto remains!
From our office in Luxembourg we facilitate the conception, management and production of projects creating meaningful connections between artists, collectors, institutions and the public. Our work spans exhibitions, cultural initiatives, corporate events, production and logistics and we can offer strategic guidance across acquisitions, exhibitions and cultural programming. Beyond the arts we also advise businesses, public organisations on marketing strategy, helping to develop initiatives with creativity, clarity and cultural impact.
